Hardy, Godfrey Harold (1877 - 1947)

Hardy, British matematician. His detailed biography can be read in www.
It not appropriate to mention Hardy only in context of his short paper published in Science about gene requencies, because Hardy as a pure mathematician hoped his mathematics could never be applied. Although he thought that the simple mathematics behind his reasoning was unimportant, still he is known among biologists for this theorem, the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. (www)

Even if your are a poor peaon without any knowlegde of mathematics, you can still enjoy reading the biography of Hardy, and eccentric man:

Another example of his trying to fool God was when he went to cricket matches he would take what he called his "anti-God battery". This consisted of thick sweaters, an umbrella, mathematical papers to referee, student examination scripts etc. His theory was that God would think that he expected rain to come so that he could then get on with his work. Since Hardy thought that God would then have the sun shine all day to spite him, he would be able to enjoy the cricket in perfect sunshine.

Weinberg, a German physician arreived at the same conclusion and published "Über den Nachweis des Verebung beim Menschen" in the same year, 1908.
