February 15, 2000 IN THE BRAINS OF THE VIOLENT, GRAY MATTER MAY MATTER from The Washington Post People with a smaller than average amount of gray matter in a key section of their brains may be predisposed to violent antisocial behavior, according to a provocative and controversial new study. Scientists used brain scans to compare the volume of the prefrontal area--the region directly behind the eyes and lower forehead--in a group of normal subjects and in a group whose members had committed crimes such as assault, rape, armed robbery and attempted murder.
