SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR DINNER What do Ken Hom, Ainsley Harriot and Robert Carrier have in common with Linda, a chimpanzee at a Madrid zoo? They are all famous for "food transformation". Ever since a spot of dental trouble in 1992, Linda has been mashing her fruit and vegetables before consuming them. Now, in what could be the first case of animals actually "cooking", other chimps in the enclosure have adopted Linda's ingenious pureeing techniques. In fact, according to primatologist Fernandez-Carriba, the animals invest a significant amount of time in preparing their dishes and seem to derive great enjoyment and satisfaction from the end result. http://www.newscientist.com/nl/0819/chimps.html |
